Why have a Dyslexia Assessment?
There are various reasons why you might suspect your child has dyslexia and are contemplating a dyslexia assessment. It could stem from concerns about their academic advancement or a familial history of dyslexia. Additionally, the school may have raised concerns or detected dyslexia indicators through screening tests. Above all, you're exploring these concerns, and I'm here to support you and your child through the process.
It is crucial to understand that dyslexia can only be formally diagnosed through a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. This assessment can be conducted by either an Educational Psychologist or a certified specialist teacher, like myself.
What happens during the assessment process?
After your assessment appointment is confirmed, you'll receive a link to obtain both a family/client questionnaire and a school questionnaire (if applicable). These questionnaires contain valuable background information that will help inform the diagnostic decision and shape the recommendations presented within the report. Please ensure that both questionnaires are completed and returned at least two days prior to your scheduled assessment.
On the day of the assessment, it is recommended that you or your child bring a water bottle, a pen, and any necessary eyewear, such as glasses or a coloured overlay. The assessment is expected to last approximately three hours, inclusive of breaks. I understand that the assessment process can be daunting for both children and adults. Therefore I take great care to put you and your child at ease in order to create a calm, positive environment for the assessment.
A dyslexia assessment will investigate:
Underlying ability: Verbal and Non-Verbal underlying ability.
Information Processing: Phonological processing; Working memory; Processing speed.
Academic attainment: Single word reading; Timed reading; Reading comprehension; Spelling; Handwriting speed, clarity and expression.
The assessment process, based on the client's background information, test results, and observations, determines a formal diagnosis of dyslexia. However, in the event that insufficient evidence exists to support such a diagnosis, a detailed report that highlights the individual's performance in the assessed areas will still be provided. The report will also outline areas of strength and development, and recommend supportive strategies and resources for use both at home and in the classroom, university, or work environment. In some cases, the report may suggest referrals to other professionals for further investigation.
You will receive your assessment report within twenty-eight days of the date of the assessment.
